Leadership question
What is the Swedish leadership style?
In short: leading through trust rather than control, giving teams real autonomy, and keeping a balanced, sustainable pace — lagom. It is especially useful for founders and CEOs who feel they have to hold everything themselves while their company scales.
1. Trust over control
Swedish leaders tend to assume people will do good work and give them room to do it. For a founder, this means letting go of decisions others can own — instead of becoming the bottleneck as the company grows.
2. Autonomy with clarity
Flat structures only work when direction is clear. The leader sets the why and the boundaries; the team decides the how. The result is a leadership team that acts without waiting for you.
3. Lagom
Lagom means “just the right amount”. In leadership it is a sustainable pace and a way of leading you can keep up — not heroic sprints followed by exhaustion.
How to start using it
Begin with reflection: which decisions do you still hold that someone else could own? Where does your team wait for you? What pace could you sustain for the next year? Jessica Hill Holm, executive coach and advisor for founders and CEOs driving change while scaling, works with these questions through her method — Reflect. Realign. Redesign.
